Upon arrival, you will be picked up at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Take this time to settle in, relax, and prepare for the exciting experiences ahead.

🌋 Day 2. Irazú & Turrialba Volcanoes, Cartago & Orosí Valley Exploration.

Embark on a scenic and educational journey through Costa Rica’s volcanic landscapes, colonial history, and coffee culture, gaining insights into the country’s natural and socio-economic evolution.
🌄 Irazú Volcano, the highest peak of the trip, offers breathtaking crater views and allows us to study microclimate dynamics and paramo-like ecosystems. Pass by Turrialba Volcano, an active stratovolcano, to observe its geological significance and farming impact and discover how these volcanoes contribute to the fertile lands that sustain Costa Rica’s top agricultural regions.

🏛 Cartago City & Orosí Valley: Colonial Heritage & Coffee Culture
✔ Visit Cartago, the former capital, and explore colonial churches that reflect Costa Rica’s religious and historical legacy. Continue to Orosí Valley, a region rich in history, where you’ll learn about Costa Rica’s past and early settlements.

🐢 Day 3. Journey to Tortuguero National Park: Wildlife & Conservation.

Today, travel to Tortuguero National Park, a biodiversity hotspot accessible only by boat, ensuring a low-impact and well-preserved ecosystem. This unique region is one of the best places in Costa Rica to observe wildlife, with an intricate network of natural and man-made canals surrounded by a richly stratified rainforest.
🌿 Afternoon: Rainforest Hike & Sea Turtle Conservation
✔ Hike through Tortuguero Rainforest, where the vegetation is beautifully layered into understory, lower and upper middle levels, canopy, and emergent trees.
✔ Visit the Sea Turtle Conservancy, where you’ll learn about the largest Green Sea Turtle nesting site in the Western Hemisphere and ongoing conservation efforts.
✔ Stay overnight at Mawamba Lodge, immersing yourself in the sounds of the jungle.

🦜 Wildlife Highlights of Tortuguero
Tortuguero is a thriving habitat for an incredible variety of species, including:
✔ Crocodiles, caimans & river turtles in the canals.
✔ Poison dart frogs and other fascinating amphibians.
✔ Three species of monkeys: Howler, Spider, and White-faced Capuchin.
✔ Two species of sloths found in Costa Rica.

🚤 Day 4. Tortuguero Canals & La Selva Biological Station Exploration

🌅 Early Morning: Boat Safari in Tortuguero Canals
Start your day with a sunrise boat safari through the Tortuguero Canals, where the rainforest awakens with the sounds of howler monkeys, exotic birds, and the gentle flow of the water. This is the best time to spot:
✔ Crocodiles, caimans & river turtles basking along the riverbanks.
✔ Herons, egrets & toucans soaring above the lush canopy.
✔ Monkeys & sloths moving through the trees in search of breakfast.
After the safari, return for breakfast before departing Tortuguero.

🚤 Transfer to La Selva Biological Station
📌 09:00 AM – Boat Transfer to La Pavona Dock (Approx. 1 hour)
📌 Drive through banana plantations to Guápiles, where we will stop for lunch.
🔬 Afternoon: Scientific Exploration at La Selva Biological Station
After lunch, continue to La Selva Biological Station, one of the most renowned research centers for tropical ecology and conservation in the Neotropics.
✔ Hike through research trails, exploring one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world.
✔ Learn about ongoing ecological research and conservation efforts.
✔ Compare the unique life zone of La Selva, which differs from Tortuguero due to variations in climate, elevation, and biodiversity.

🌋 Evening Transfer to Arenal Volcano
After a half-day visit to La Selva, continue your journey to Arenal Volcano, where new adventures await!

🌋 Day 5. Arenal Volcano Hike & La Fortuna Waterfall Exploration

🌄 Morning: Arenal Volcano National Park Hike
After breakfast, set out for a hike through Arenal Volcano National Park, where you’ll walk along the 1992 lava flow trail. This hike offers a fascinating look at ecological succession, as the landscape recovers from Arenal’s powerful 1968 eruption, which devastated the area after centuries of dormancy.
✔ Observe a regenerating forest, where pioneer species have recolonized the volcanic terrain since activity slowed in 2010.

Along the way, enjoy panoramic vistas of the Gulf of Nicoya, a reminder of the country’s dynamic tectonic past.

🌎 Afternoon: Hike to the Continental Divide at Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Upon arrival, embark on a guided hike through Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, managed by the Tropical Science Center. This reserve is home to one of the richest ecosystems in the world, where misty forests and towering trees create a truly magical atmosphere.
✔ Reach the Continental Divide, where only 60 feet separate the Caribbean and Pacific slopes.
✔ Observe microclimate contrasts, experiencing humidity and temperature differences as the trade winds interact with both slopes.

Begin the day with a scenic drive around Lake Arenal, the largest lake in Costa Rica, passing by the windmills of Tierras Morenas. This route marks the transition from the lush Caribbean rainforest to the dry tropical forest of the Pacific slope, offering a striking change in landscapes.

🐦 Palo Verde National Park (Time Permitting – 12-mile detour each way)
If time allows, take a short detour to Palo Verde National Park, a biodiversity hotspot in Guanacaste. This marshy system, rich in limestone formations and vertisol soils, plays a crucial role in supporting migratory and resident water birds.
✔ Birdwatching opportunities: Spot northern jacanas, black-bellied whistling ducks, wood storks, and—if lucky—the endangered Jabiru, the tallest flying bird in Central America.

✔ Boiling hot springs & sulfur vents, revealing Earth’s internal heat.
✔ The transition from Rainforest to Dry Forest, a rare ecological shift shaped by climate, altitude, and soil composition.
✔ The Plateau of Ignimbrites, a geological formation resulting from ancient volcanic eruptions.
✔ Costa Rica’s Geothermal Energy Project, an example of the country’s commitment to 100% renewable electricity production.

🏝 Afternoon: Transfer to Flamingo Beach & Geological Exploration
After completing our dry forest discoveries, we will head to Flamingo Beach, located along the Gold Coast of Costa Rica in Guanacaste.
✔ Visit the Ophiolitic Complex at Flamingo Beach, a rare geological formation where ancient oceanic crust has been uplifted, providing insight into plate tectonics and the Earth’s evolution.
✔ Free afternoon at Flamingo Beach, where you can relax on white-sand shores, swim in turquoise waters, or explore the local area.
